CUP COMPETITIONS 2009-10
Senior Women's Cup (Jean Findlay Memorial Trophy)
Final - Arbroath Musketeers 58 - 44 Dundee Sharks
Date - Tuesday 25th May - Tip Off - 8:15pm
Venue - Mayfield Sports Centre, 193 Arbroath Road, Dundee, DD4 7HS
Arbroath Musketeers Women won the Jean Findlay Memorial Trophy at Mayfield Sports Centre, Dundee.
After a strong start by Arbroath Musketeers and Christie Morgan in particular, the Dundee Sharks got themselves back in the game through Kat Kane and ended the 1st quarter even at 13-13. Muskies Erin Ritchie scored 6 points in a hurry but more good work under the basket by Kat Kane and outside shooting by Jude Clark ensured Sharks had a 3 point lead at half time 26-23.
In the third quarter, Musketeers changed their defence and their offense which resulted in quick fast break baskets by Laura MacFarlane and a couple of three pointers from Erin Ritchie stretched out the lead to 12 points at the end of Q3. Scotland Under 15 cap Yhana Van Wees capped a fine performance to finish with 14 points in the game and 14 rebounds to be named MVP, and despite a late flurry by Sharks veteran guard Elaine Ross the gap was maintained and Musketeers held out to win the Jean Findlay Memorial trophy 58-44.
Musketeers Erin Ritchie top scored in the game with 16 points personal, backed up by 14 points each from Captain Laura MacFarlane and Yhana Van Wees with Christie Morgan hitting 11 points. Only Kat Kane (12 pts) and Elaine Ross (10 pts) crept in to double digits for the Sharks, with Judith Clark contributing 9 pts and Sulvi Hobson 8 points and basketballtayside & fife league co-ordinator Amanda Wilson 3 points.
Arbroath Musketeers 58: (Ritchie 16 pts, MacFarlane 14, Van Wees 14, Morgan 11, Adam 2, McLoughlin 1)

Senior Men's Div 2 Cup (Millenium Shield)
Final - Dunfermline Steel 49 - 60 Dunfermline Reign
Date - Wednesday 19th May 2010 Tip Off - 8:10pm
Venue - Duloch Leisure Centre, Nightingale Place, Dunfermline, Fife, KY11 8LW
Defences were on top in a tightly contested final played out in front of a healthy crowd at Duloch LC. Division 2 League Winners Dunfermline Reign started stronger from the tip off, pulling out an early lead through Stuart Anderson and some Alistair Horne free throws only for Callum Knox to get Steel back in the game with some outside shooting. Ian Hildersley, Garreth Roberts and Darren Bartolo kept the deficit down but James Steel and Darryl Wood kept up the momentum for Reign who led 30-18 at half time. A strong 3rd quarter from Reign and Callum O'Donnell in particular saw Reign stretch out their lead to a game high 40-26 at the end of Q3. Callum Knox survived foul trouble to lead a Steel comeback and win the 4th quarter by 3pts.
However a MVP performance by Alistair Horne in defence and on the fast break ensured Reign held on to win the Div 2 Cup (and hence the Div 2 double) with a deserved 60-49 scoreline. Reign Captain, Darryl Wood, collected both trophies from Alistair Maddock of basketballtayside & fife and Alan Robertson, Honorary Vice President of basketballscotland after the game.
Dunfermline Steel - Callum Knox 14pts, Ian Hildersley 10 pts, Darren Bartolo 9pts, Callum Hotchkiss 7 pts, Adam Syme 4pts, Garreth Roberts 3 pts, Peter Marshall 2 pts
Dunfermline Reign - Alistair Horne 18 pts, Callum O'Donnell 13 pts, Stuart Anderson 7 pts, James Steel 6pts, Calum McKinley 6pts, Darryl Wood 4pts, Toni McGlone 3pts, Gary Campbell 2pts, Tichaona Mpofu 1pt.
Senior Men's Open Cup (Tom Hermiston Trophy)
Final - St Andrew's University 80 - 78 Abertay University
Date - Sunday 2nd May 2010 - Tip Off 3pm
(preceded by T&F U14 Development League matches)
Venue - D.I.S.C. (Dundee International Sports Complex), Mains Loan, Dundee DD4 7AA
In an excellent game, which was close throughout the whole 40 minutes, 37 points from Rowan Kane plus 25 points from fellow American Jack Deligter secured the Tom Hermiston Cup for St Andrew's University Men's basketball team. Captain Bobby Fessler contributed 7 points, but it was Rowan Kane's dominant performance which won the cup and saw him named the MVP (most valuable player) of the Final.
6' 10" Polish centre Lucas Harbowaski chipped in 22 points (including two huge put-back dunks), Portuguese student Daniel Dias 21 points and former Scotland Junior international Adam Carpenter 13 points in a valiant effort from Abertay University which just fell one basket short in the end.

Schools
Tayside & Fife Secondary Schools
Tayside & Fife Secondary Schools followed last year's unprecedented success in the 2010 basketballscotland Scottish Schools Cup with another 9 of our school teams reaching 8 finals, including one all Tayside & Fife affair in the S1 Girls Cup.
Secondary Schools basketball was a key focus for a lot of Tayside & Fife schools and a record number of boys and girls teams entered the basketballscotland Scottish Schools Cups, with first round losers going into the consolation "Plate" competition. The S1 competition enjoyed more games this year as a regional format was adopted for the earlier rounds.
There are four age groups; S1, U14, U15 and Open (S4-S6) for Boys and Girls meaning there are 16 categories, and therefore 16 Finals, across the Cup and Plate competitions. For Tayside & Fife schools to have 9 finalists in 8 competitions is a fantastic achievement.
Arbroath HS (Angus) and Grove Academy (Dundee) in particular deserve a special mention as they reached four and two Cup finals respectively, with Forfar Academy reaching two Plate finals. It is no co-incidence that these schools have a strong basketball programme at their secondary school but also a very good Primary School development programme in their respective Cluster's, ensuring that their future secondary school pupils have some excellent basketball fundamentals when they go into First Year.
This year the finals were hosted at Edinburgh University's Pleasance Sports Centre, with some excellent and exciting basketball displayed over the finals week. Highlight of the week was Abrbroath HS's Nicky Sim hitting a three point last second buzzer beater against Portobello HS in the U15 Boys' Cup Final, a game which they went on to win in overtime.
Scottish Cup winners and congratulations to players, teachers and the following schools:
U15 Boys - Arbroath High School beat Portobello High School
U15 Girls - Arbroath High School beat Boroughmuir High School
S1 Boys - Grove Academy beat Millburn Academy
S1 Girls - Grove Academy beat Arbroath High School
Commiserations, but well done on getting to the final, goes to:
S1 Girls Cup - Arbroath High School runners up to Grove Academy
U14 Girls Cup - Arbroath High School runners up to St Maurice's HS
S1 Girls Plate - Forfar Academy runners up to Mary Erskine School
U14 Girls Plate - Forfar Academy runners up to Portobello High School
U15 Girls Plate - Perth Grammar School runners up to St Andrews Secondary School
There were numerous other Tayside & Fife Schools who put up a tremendous show but lost out at either semi final or quarter final stage such as Woodmill HS, Monifieth HS, Kinross HS and Queen Anne HS and all Tayside & Fife secondary schools are to be commended for the basketball opportunities they provide for their pupils.
Tayside & Fife Primary Schools
Congratulations to Birkhill PS of Angus who won the Tayside & Fife Primary School Basketball Championship at Lynch SC in Dundee on Wednesday 31st March 2010. Six teams qualified through local and area finals events, and after preliminary rounds at the finals Birkhill PS and Langlands PS of Forfar qualified for the Grand Final. It was a tense affair and with the teams still level after regulation time (four quarters of 5 minutes) it was left for Martin George of Birkhill PS to hit the golden basket in overtime and seal the silverware with a "swish".
